When the iPhone first launched, it was preloaded with Google Maps. In 2012, Apple replaced it with its own mapping application known as Apple Maps. It launched in beta in the iOS 6 beta, and was released to the public that fall.

After its launched, it was clear that it was no on the same level of quality as Google Maps. The poor launch led to a public apology from Tim Cook and ultimately led to the firing of Scott Forstall.

Apple Maps Features

Over the years, Apple has continued to adds features to Apple Maps. iOS 11 brought lane guidance and a speed limit widget on the navigation, and indoor location mapping.

Apple has also added proactive location suggestions (time to get home when you are leaving work, etc), integration with public transit, Yelp integration, and integration with ride sharing services like Lyft and Uber.

With iOS 12, Apple has proclaimed they are rebuilding Maps from the ground up.

Maps is being rebuilt from the ground up to better reflect the world around you. The new underlying map uses Apple data and features enhanced geographic context like pedestrian paths and parks, more detailed building outlines and parking lots, better road network coverage, and more. You’ll also be able to get where you’re going with improved routes, whether you’re on the road or on foot. The new Maps is now available in Northern California and is coming soon to the rest of the United States.

While the general consensus is that Google Maps offers more accurate data and navigation, Apple Maps is widely considered to be the most used mapping application in the world since it’s built into every iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Apple Maps now highlights expert-rated restaurants, hotels, and more in the U.S.

New Apple Maps interface with Michelin distinctions.

Starting today, Apple Maps users in the U.S. will be able to search for and view restaurants and hotels with MICHELIN Guide distinctions, including MICHELIN Stars, Green Stars, Bib Gourmand restaurants, and Key-rated hotels.

Apple is also bringing curated content and rankings from The Infatuation and Golf Digest to Maps “soon,” with more sources planned for the future.

Apple needs to step on the gas for better EV support in CarPlay

Apple Maps EV Routing

Over the last decade, CarPlay has become ubiquitous on almost all makes and models of cars. Consumers love it too. In fact, Apple has said before that 80% of new car buyers require CarPlay as a specification before making their purchase.

However, this argument is less satisfactory when it comes to electric vehicles. Aside from Tesla or Rivian, almost all EVs come with CarPlay installed, but its utility is greatly diminished. CarPlay support for electric vehicle routing is just weak. Apple really needs to step on the gas and get its act together …

Apple Maps Look Around cars will now also take photos to help train Apple Intelligence models

You may have seen Apple Maps survey cars in your area before. As they drive around, the cars take photos and 3D scans to generate ground truth data that can be used to improve map accuracy and offer features like Look Around, Apple’s equivalent of Google Street View.

But now the data collected from these cars will also have another purpose. In an updated disclosure on the Apple Maps Image Collection website, Apple says that starting this month, imagery from its vehicle surveys will also be used to train generative AI models, like those used for Apple Intelligence features such as Image Playground and Clean Up.

Apple Maps in iOS 18 got a new feature that’s been on my wishlist for years

Apple Maps

Apple Maps is great for navigation, but I especially love using the app to browse new areas, find a great coffee shop, and plan outings and adventures. For those use cases, iOS 18 brought a key change to search in Apple Maps that somehow has been missing for years: you can now search the specific area you’re viewing on the map. And that’s been a huge answered wish for me.

Apple first launched cycling directions in Maps in late 2020, although at first it was U.S only in a smattering of cities. Support for cycling navigation in the UK has been available for a while, but coverage was patchy … until now.
